Product Characteristics

PRODUCT OVERVIEW: Greentorch’s LEC (Light Emitting Capacitor) illuminating technology is ultra energy efficient and uses a continuous layer of millions of microscopic encapsulated zinc sulfide photon emitting crystals to create a bright and evenly illuminated exit sign. The LEC Series uses only a fifth of a watt of electricity, making it the most energy efficient electrically powered exit sign in the industry. The thin profile and compact design of our LEC sign adds to its aesthetic appeal. LEC lighting technology has been in use in exit signs for over 10 years providing superior performance. The LEC exit sign’s long lifespan is due to the direct viewing of tiny solid-state light sources, which maintain their collective uniformity. Other lighting technologies rely on redirected light to provide uniform illumination, which diminishes over time, causing unbalanced light output resulting in unreadable and unsafe exit signs. The LEC Series comes with green letters in either a white or black ABS thermoplastic housing.

CONSTRUCTION: Precision molded housing and mounting canopy constructed of impact-resistant, UV stable, flame-retarding ABS alloy which resists scratching and denting. NFPA field selectable chevrons are provided. Available in Black and White standard finishes.

ILLUMINATION: Illumination is provided by Greentorch’s proprietary LEC panel, which provides millions of microscopic light emitting crystals to achieve unequaled uniformity. The green pigment emitted by the LEC panel is regarded as the most universally recognizable green color frequency for the human eye.

EXIT FACE:
Letter Size: 6” letters with 3/4” stroke
Directional Indicators: Infield applicable chevron arrows sized to meet UL visibility requirements.

BATTERY TECHNOLOGY: The LEC Series models with the battery backup option are designed to use a maintenance free, sealed Nickel-Cadmium battery pack that provides a minimum 90 minutes of emergency operation. When lamp heads are added to make the LEC sign a combination exit sign with emergency lights, the battery used is Nickel Metal Hydride. Recharge time of the battery is 24 hours. The maximum battery working temperature is 50 C or 122 F.

INSTALLATION: Greentorch’s LEC signs are factory configured Top/Ceiling Mount, Back Wall Mount and Right or Left Side Wall Mount, Flush Mount for easy field installation.

ELECTRICAL SPECIFICATIONS: The LEC lamp brightness is increased by about 25% and will operate for up to 2 hours on the battery system.
Utility Input: 120/277VAC, 60 Hz.
Temperature Range: 65ºF to 85ºF or 19ºC to 35ºC
Load Transfer: Solid state-smart change circuit is provided to increase battery life
Controls: Push to test switch and an LED test light AC indicator are provided for system testing.

CODE COMPLIANCE: Meets or exceeds UL 924, NFPA 101 Life Safety Code, NEC, OSHA, state and local codes.

Question : Does this exit sign plug-in to a wall outlet?
Answer : No. LED and other types of electrical exit signs have to be hard-wired into your electrical system. Electrical exit signs must be hard-wired to be building and fire code compliant. If you are looking for an exit sign to use in a location that does not have electricity available please look at our non-electrical Self Luminous and Photoluminescent exit signs.
Question : How do I know if this exit sign is approved for use in my city/county/state?
Answer : The UL listing (Underwriters Laboratories) for of our exit signs ensures that these signs are code compliant. UL tests our exit signs and then gives their approval. This approval comes in the form of a listing. As long as your exit sign is UL listed it will work for your jurisdiction. Two exceptions exist: New York City and Chicago, which have their own exit sign specifications in addition to the UL listing.
Question : What does 120/277v mean?
Answer : 120/277 refers to the line voltage that the exit sign can operate on. 120 refers to residential and small commercial line voltage while 220 refers to commercial and office building line voltage. The main point is that our exit signs will work in either situation so you don’t need to worry about the functionality. We recommend using a licensed electrician or maintenance professional to install exit signs, emergency lights and other safety egress equipment.
Question : What is and do I need the battery backup option?
Answer : The battery backup option provides emergency battery power to illuminate your exit sign or emergency light in case of a fire, earthquake, or other emergency that causes a power outage. You must have the battery backup model if you DO NOT have a generator that provides emergency power to your facility.
Question : Are non-electrical signs bright enough?
Answer : Both Tritium and Photoluminescent Exit signs are subject to visibility tests at UL. Signs bearing the UL listed mark meet or exceed the minimum requirements as set forth by UL, which are accepted by NFPA 101 Life Safety and are accepted by building codes including IBC. They are bright enough to pass the visibility tests. Are they bright enough to see through a smoke filled room? No sign is able to been seen through smoke, including electrical signs. In order to achieve a safe exit passage in smokey situations, low level exit signs are required.
Question : Do LEC (electroluminescent) exit signs come with letters colors other than green?
Answer : No, LED (electroluminescent) exit signs are only offered in green.
Our products typically carry a 5 year warranty though on certain items the warranty is longer. All products are guaranteed to be new, and free from defect. Batteries carry a 5 year prorated warranty.
